Oh my word! Just occasionally, I’m in the right place to take a photo… two QH babies making friends with a beautiful WB gelding 🥰 The foals' submissive mouthing went into overdrive faced with this big guy.

The emergence of lacing… this pony’s coat has been raised for a week, in the distinctive webbed pattern. The few white hairs align with the raised ridges. My money is on reticulated leukotrichia, thankfully the non-painful variety.

Lacing patterns - it seems everyone has a favourite theory and some of them are, well, a little left field. The truth is that there are different types of lacing, or Reticulated leukotrichia as it's called, with different causes. Not many of them are the popular viewpoints! An impressive muscle tear with all the components: a large but low-pressure fluid bulge, and beneath that a perfect palpable ring of scar tissue (with a gnarly twist at the bottom), and in the centre, an absence. It’s no longer sore, but the position close to the hamstring tendons has led to a shortened stride and a barely there loss of fine tuning, similar to mild fibrotic myopathy. The weirdest skeleton I ever came across had multiple areas of fusion through the vertebral joints. After digging around in various texts and scientific literature to ascertain the cause, I came across a paleopathology paper that described much the same condition in an uncovered Gallo-Roman horse skeleton - Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH). More commonly seen in humans, who of course get the required medical imaging (and no doubt a lot of pain relief), this involves ossification of the tendon and ligament insertion points around the vertebral joints, as well as some other areas of the body. In humans, it's also known as Forestier disease. DISH is typified in its advanced stages by the ''flowing wax'' appearance of the ossified structures, and it's this that helped me to recognize the condition in the Gallo-Roman horse skeleton as being the same/very similar to the skeleton I had. To my eternal regret, my sample deteriorated badly during cleaning - the horse lived in a low phosphorous area, and the resulting calcium:phosphoorous imbalance which can lead to bone brittleness. However, the unusual formations and sheer extent of the fusion are still visible.

Foals are on the ground in Australia, so these early weeks are when it's time to check out their legs for straightness. If you know what to look for, all well and good. But if you don't, ask your vet just to be sure. Dr. C. Wayne McIlwraith, Professor in orthopaedics, recommends regular veterinary checks starting at 30 days - a deviation that may be barely noticeable in the first month can become much more pronounced as the foal gains height and weight. Most deviations will correct naturally with careful management, with only the most severe and those unresponsive to trimming needing surgical intervention. The earlier better - if you can find the right hoof practitioner, someone who with clear knowledge of taping for this problem, and a vet to keep an eye on things, much can come right in a really short period of time. I also recommend gentle bodywork to help the foal to open out while they're getting less exercise due to confinement. - Jane

Gosh I love payment in kind... especially when it's unexpected. I dropped by to give a short BEMER session to a friend's mare who was injured in a storm last week, and received this little cornucopia on my way out. Yum! So grateful. This got me thinking about other payments I've received... some time back, I spent a year or so swapping bodywork sessions for car maintenance. That was a good one! 😁
