Description
Managing the Miracle Foal
The Essential Handbook for Owners of Premature and Dysmature Foals
by Jane Clothier PhD

Understand potential long-term effects and learn how to manage them
A premature and dysmature foal can survive the early days – and will often do well. For this reason, many owners will call them a Miracle Foal.
However, foals that are underdeveloped at birth can still face challenges that only emerge in the months or even years ahead.
Managing the Miracle Foal is a practical, evidence-based handbook for owners, breeders, and equine professionals who want to understand what comes next, once the early crisis is over.
What happens when these foals grow up?
Learn More About Managing the Miracle Foal
If you’re searching for answers about a premature or dysmature foal, you may be asking questions such as:
-
Will this foal develop normally as it grows?
-
Are any problems later in life connected to early immaturity?
-
What should I be watching for — and when?
-
What can I do now to support long-term health and soundness?
-
My foal looks fine – but are there hidden problems?
This book was written precisely for that time when the immediate crisis has passed, but your questions about the future are coming to the fore.
What Managing the Miracle Foal is About
Adapted from original PhD research into equine prematurity and dysmaturity, Managing the Miracle Foal explains what the current research shows about the ongoing effects of gestational immaturity in horses.
In doing so, it addresses development, function, and welfare, looking at invisible conditions as well as those that are more obvious to the eye.
This text offers owners clear explanations of:
-
What research reveals about long-term outcomes for premature and dysmature foals
-
Why gestational age alone doesn’t tell the full story
-
Where prematurity and dysmaturity are similar and why that’s important
-
The signs and patterns that may emerge as your foal grows
-
Practical ways to support healthy development, make positive training decisions and identify appropriate future careers for your foal
Because each foal is different, outcomes can vary widely. Understanding what may happen allows you to respond early, confidently, and appropriately.
Why This Book is Different
Most information about premature and dysmature foals focuses on the first days or weeks of life – and rightly so, as this can be a critical time.
Managing the Miracle Foal examines these too, but with a focus on what may follow.
Rather than offering reassurance or worst-case scenarios, the author provides:
-
A balanced, evidence-based perspective
-
Clear explanations without over-simplification
-
Practical guidance grounded in the author’s real-world observation
-
Extensive images and illustrations to support understanding
It is designed to be used, revisited, and referenced as your young horse develops and matures.
It can also help with understanding an older horse with a history of prematurity or dysmaturity.
