A question for Jane:
Have you had any success in thermal imaging horses in the elbow area and correlating back to the symptoms or at dissection?
Cheers

Hi. If you're using joint supplements, then continue with those and if not, maybe consider using one. It's not established that horses are in constant pain from this, as they do seem to adapt. The problems seem to be with younger more active horses that are having 'flare ups' as the joint remodels. I would only be concerned if your mare were showing signs of being unwilling to go downhill. Keep hooves trimmed regularly and well-balanced, as this will also help to minimise joint stress. Once you have your eye in for this problem, you'll see that many, many horses exhibit signs, and the majority appear to be fine, most of the time. The main thing is to be aware, so that you can recognise if there's painful aggravation in the joint.

If you're seeing that double action in the elbow joint, then it's likely, yes. In my personal experience, the more asymmetries there are in the body, the more likely it is that this problem will be present. That's wholly unscientific, of course...

Hi,

My gelding is 9 and retired due to severe neck arthritis. Steriods only worked for 3 months so decided to retire him 2 months ago.

I've noticed he has a very similar should movement to these videos, if anything worse. Especially going downhill.

Could this be related to elbow arthritis?
